Have you noticed an increase
in Spam?

IT Managers agree with researchers like eSoft’s Threat Prevention Team that spam levels have increased significantly.  Some IT managers are seeing double the amount of spam that they did before October of this year.  Not just Viruses, but Phishing and Spyware now use spam email as a common method to infect machines and steal information.  In addition machines infected by Spyware, Trojans or other intrusions are being collected in large botnets (computers controlled by a hacking network) and being used to send out huge amounts of spam unbeknownst to the user.

The significant increase in email volume means higher requirements for bandwidth, lower user productivity, and increased processing for email systems and gateways.  These changes mean that IT managers need to monitor their email equipment, tune it to catch more spam, and plan for necessary upgrades.  eSoft’s SpamFilter Training Guide is an excellent resource on using multiple Anti-Spam technologies to catch spam and manage spam quarantines.  More importantly, eSoft’s Next Generation InstaGate and ThreatWall platforms provide high performance hardware to fight the increase in volume and sophistication of Internet threats.  Request more information from your eSoft certified VAR or directly from eSoft.

ThreatWall and InstaGate
support SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a widely used network management protocol used to monitor network devices.  SNMP management tools can be used to monitor the InstaGate or ThreatWall, see configuration, and gather statistics.  Both support SNMP v2 (MIB-II).  Some common uses for SNMP include monitoring:

• Inbound/Outbound network traffic
• Uptime
• Network Errors
• TCP/IP Configuration and Routes

To Enable the SNMP agent go to System Administration -> SNMP. Use an SNMP manager of your choice.

Are you getting error messages in your logs that say, “failed ssh login attempt”? With the proliferation of servers and firewalls on the Internet, it is not uncommon to see people randomly searching for public IP addresses and then attempting to gain access when they find one.

Due to the way eSoft handles its SSH passwords, the chances of someone gaining entry are minimal, but if the messages in the logs become problematic, here is a tip for getting around the issue:   Go into the User Interface and check to see that that Support->Remote Support is disabled. This will prevent the SSH port from responding to connection attempts, stopping these type of connections in their tracks. Remote Support need only be enabled if the administrator wants to manage the unit remotely, or to allow eSoft Support Technicians access for troubleshooting. If you do enable Remote Support, make sure to disable it again to disable SSH access on the unit once the work is completed.
