eSoft: Simply better network security.™

SiteFilter® Security

Overview

eSoft’s core competencies in malware analysis, anti-virus, and spam blocking lend a unique perspective to the collected and categorized URLs. eSoft’s Threat Prevention Lab receives thousands of new pieces of malware every day. Each piece of malware, from keystroke loggers to trojan droppers, is analyzed and any website or IP addresses that it communicates with are immediately inspected and categorized to protect customers from the threats they pose. When spam comes in that contains a URL, that URL is immediately added to the Spam category. eSoft’s Intrusion Prevention experience and ongoing research also leads to the rapid discovery of malicious websites. eSoft’s alliances and relationships with dozens of security companies and researchers provide further extensive sources of suspicious websites.

Short-Life Websites

According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) (note: eSoft is a member), the average Internet scam site is online for less than 24 hours. eSoft's research shows that new sites hosting malware come online every couple of minutes. Anonymizers used to evade web filters seem to last only hours. A search for "unblock myspace" returns nearly a million results. These short-life websites appear and disappear before traditional web filtering solutions can identify them and long before customers update their local databases. This gap means that your average high school student has no trouble evading web filters and your average hacker has even less trouble. eSoft tackles this problem head on with proactive identification of new malicious, phishing, anonymizer, and other short-life websites. Once identified, the classification of these sites is immediately propogated to eSoft customers so that security stays tight even as new sites blink on- and off-line.

New Threats

eSoft proactively combs the Internet looking for websites that host malicious software and exploit web browsers and web browser plugins. By watching the website's behavior and using real web browsers, eSoft can tell when a site is malicious even if it is a new exploit and a completely new piece of malware. This protection helps eSoft stay ahead of new threats on the Internet.

Calling Home

Most modern software "calls home" to check for updates and malware is no exception. Most viruses and spyware today have a call home address for reporting information and a call home address for looking for commands or updated versions. eSoft's anti-virus team extracts these URLs when analyzing malware and those URLs are put directly into the web filtering database for immediate release. Not only does this allow administrators to stop dangerous Internet activity, but it also allows administrators to identify infected machines on their own network.
