CIPA Compliance - Reporting

Overview

This document provides examples of useful reports to help monitor activity that relates to Children's Internet Protection Act, or CIPA, criteria. Included are a list of the default reports that come standard on the unit as well as a  link to documentation for creating custom reports.

This document is intended to assist educators and administrators in education on CIPA information. eSoft, and this document, does not offer legal advice and you should consult with an attorney whenever you think it necessary concerning questions about CIPA compliance and meeting any requirements outlined within.

Viewing The Reports

While there are many reports available to you via the ThreatMonitor, most of the relating to CIPA Compliance can be found in the Web Activity tab.

More specifically, the following reports will give you an excellent overview of the web activity from your network:

  • Top Allowed Categories - This report shows a summary of the categories that were visited the most and allowed by your web security policy.

  • Top Blocked Categories- This report shows a summary of the categories that were visited the most and blocked by your web security policy.

  • Top Transferred By Client - This report shows which users transferred the most amount of data. High data transfer is usually associated with a user actively downloading or uploading web content.

  • Log - This report is a listing of all web activity.  It shows time, the site, who accessed it, and what action was taken by the proxy server.

Reporting Features

While viewing the reports in the ThreatMonitor is useful, it's not always convenient. Because of this you have the option to have the unit send you a daily summary of the reports or you can export reports into Excel.

Daily Report

  1. From the menu on the left select Alert & Reports -> Report Settings.
  2. Specify the email address to send the daily report. You can enter more than one by separating the addresses with a comma(,).
  3. Change "Reports To Include" to Selected Reports.
  4. Select which reports you wish to have sent. If you want to only send the reports listed above then change the selected reports to match the image below.

  5. Click Apply.

Export to Excel

The log report, and others of the same type (Paging Table), cannot be sent as part of the daily report because of their size. To accommodate the need for these reports to be viewed outside of the Threatmonitor we have included an export feature.

  1. In the report's title bar there are four buttons. The first one is Export to Excel.
  2. Click the button to begin the export process.

  3. Select whether to save or open the file.

Creating Custom Reports

The Threatmonitor provides the ability to create your own, custom reports to fit your needs. The following article from our KnowledgeBase shows how to create custom reports for web activity that is not displayed in the default reports provided with the system:
