How does Gateway Anti-Spyware block Spyware and Viruses?

DNS Scanning

Gateway Anti-Spyware prevents LAN computers from reaching domains and addresses known to distribute spyware or to be used as spyware reporting sites. The Gateway Anti-Spyware Softpak comes with a pre-installed list of blocked sites. If a LAN client attempts to access a blocked site with a web browser, a red box displays with the following message:

"For your protection access to www.baddomain.com has been blocked as it has been associated with Spyware."

Behind the scenes, when the client machine makes the DNS query request for the bad domain, the bad domain is translated to the Gateway Anti-Spyware block address rather than it's real IP address. This will only happen and you will only see this block page if the DNS Scanning feature is enabled.

If you wish to allow your LAN clients to reach a blocked site you can unblock it by going to Gateway Anti-Spyware > Custom Destination Rules. Add the domain or IP with action "Allow". The "Allow" action enables you to remove blocks on pre-installed, blacklisted IPs or domains. The site is still scanned for spyware, viruses and malware.

HTTP and FTP Scanning

When LAN computers download files using HTTP or FTP, Gateway Anti-Spyware will proxy the connections and scan these files for spyware, viruses and malware. If the file matches a Gateway Anti-Spyware signature the file will become corrupted and unusable. Some files may generate false positives, particularly updates for Desktop Anti-Virus products. To allow these files to be downloaded and not scanned you go to Gateway Anti-Spyware > Custom Destination Rules. Add the domain or IP with action "Trust". Files from the domain or IP that you have entered will no longer be scanned for spyware, viruses or malware.

Note: Trusting known spyware sites is not recommended. Use the "Allow" action to keep scanning enabled but allow browsing of the site.

To enable and disable scanning features, go to Gateway Anti-Spyware > Settings > Advanced. For complete instructions on using the Gateway Anti-Spyware Softpak, please see the Gateway Anti-Spyware Manual at the URL below.
