What is Robotic Process Automation? │ A Master’s thesis at Esoft

Our Group Business Controller, Martin Sørensen, recently graduated with his Master’s in International Business & Management and wrote his thesis on Robotic Process Automation in collaboration with Esoft while being a student assistant in our finance department.

During the article, Martin is telling why he chose to write his thesis about Esoft, What his thesis is about if he could apply his results at Esoft and much more. But first, what is Robotic Process Automation?

What is Robotic Process Automation?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the deployment of “software robots” to automate tasks previously performed by humans. It is essentially a piece of software capable of executing mundane tasks faster and more accurately than humans, which translates into fewer mistakes and less time spent on rework.

So, I was interested in figuring out which processes Esoft uses and which of these could be automated –  and how this looked from a strategic business point of view.

My research consisted of collecting data by talking to different consultants and by collecting knowledge from various literature within the robot process automation area. When I had collected all data material, I used to analyze the processes that Esoft applied on a daily basis.

Are the results applicable?

Yes, the results of the study were highly positive in regard to the potential for robotic process automation in the analyzed processes in the Esoft Group Finance Department.

The processes that I’ve analyzed in the finance department are already on their way to be automated. The processes we are targeting are simple in nature, which allows for a higher degree of automation and faster implementation.

The goal is to automate processes that will free up time for my colleagues and allow them to spend it on tasks that require a higher degree of human thinking than a software robot can provide.

How did Esoft help you during your thesis?

My manager, Oliver, talked to me a lot about which processes the finance department was using, who to talk to when it came to demonstrating and describing the processes.

Everybody has really been great at helping me whenever I needed it. So yeah, Esoft was definitely helpful when it came to supporting me during my thesis.

What’s your role at Esoft?

I originally started in 2017 as a student assistant and that integrated into my master thesis and now I’m a full-time employee and my role is Group Business Controller which is a very broad title.

Basically, what I do is a lot of analyzing, working on software robots, business intelligence, performance evaluation, and so on.

Since becoming a full-time employee, I’ve gradually taken on more responsibilities in other business-oriented projects –  effectively acting as a business partner in the gap between finance, business and IT.

How did you end up working with business intelligence, analysis, strategies, etc?

Well, I guess the interest started during university. I have a bachelor’s degree in financial management which is a lot of accounting.  So, to spice it up I looked at another course of study which had more focus on subjects such as business management, strategy and digital transformation which I find really interesting – So, I took an MSc in International Business & Management.

What do you like the most about your job?

To make everything more automated and digitized. Also, I really like being involved in more meetings about projects, strategies, and implementations which is something I wasn’t a part of as a student assistant.

I’m glad I focused my studies on a business-oriented profile. The same can be said about my position here at Esoft, where I’ve been able to transition into a role with a greater strategic focus – which I really enjoy!

I really like being involved in projects, strategies, and implementations which is something I wasn’t a big part of as a student assistant.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

The most challenging this is definitely that some of the things I work with such as software robots and business intelligence coding can get very IT technical at times. I don’t have an IT degree so that’s some of the most difficult things, however, I’m lucky enough to have great colleagues in the tech department and in our Vietnam office who’s always ready to help.

Which one of our values do you work with the most during a normal workday?

I would say Innovation and Quality. Innovation due to my Master’s thesis and my work with digitalization, software robots, interactive business intelligence reports and so on.

And quality because we have a lot of focus on delivering quality in everything we do, and of course because no one wants to deliver something half done in these areas. A poorly configured software robot can result in a lot of rework and maintenance, which is the exact opposite of its purpose – freeing up resources!
